Two kinds of check

Soft check and full check

  • Soft check

A look at your credit file that does not affect your score. Many companies use a soft check to show you an offer.

  • Full check, also called a hard check

A check that can lower your score a little for a while. Some companies require one before they can make you an offer.

How ProLevelUp handles it

You decide what gets checked

  1. Every company is marked before you apply

You see the full list, with "soft check" or "full check" next to each name. You can remove any company you do not want.

  2. Soft-check companies are checked together

They are all checked at the same time, so you see several offers without any effect on your score.

  3. Full-check companies wait for you

They are contacted only if you pick one, after we remind you what it means, and only one at a time.

  4. Accepting an offer may lead to a full check

The company you accept may run a full check of its own before it finalises your agreement.

Marked before you apply

Every company on your list is marked "soft check" or "full check" before you apply, so you know what each one will do. Full-check companies are contacted only if you pick one, after we remind you what it means, and only one at a time.

Declined? Here is what to do

A decline is not the end of the road, and it is not a mark against you as a person. Each company that declines your application must tell you why, in writing.

You can also ask that credit bureau for a free copy of your credit report. The official free credit report site is annualcreditreport.com. Reading your report can show you an error worth correcting.

Then talk to the business. Ask about paying a deposit, financing a smaller amount, or a cheaper option that does the job.

You have rights here

Read what you are entitled to when you apply, and tell us if something was not handled properly.

Providers marked "soft check" do not affect your credit score when you check your options. Providers marked "full check" may affect your credit score; ProLevelUp contacts them only if you choose them, after telling you. Accepting an offer may involve a full credit check by that provider.
